VMware Alternatives for Indian SMEs (2026): Proxmox vs Hyper-V vs XCP-ng
Short answer: pick the hypervisor your team can run at 2 a.m. If you are a Windows shop, Hyper-V is the natural move because it is built into Windows Server. If you are comfortable with Linux and want every feature without per-core licensing, Proxmox VE is the strongest open-source choice. If you want a Xen-based platform with a polished web console, look at XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra. Staying on VMware is also valid for some businesses, and this guide says which ones.
This guide is for owners and IT managers searching for VMware alternatives for small business, Proxmox vs VMware or VMware to Proxmox migration after a renewal quote that made them look again. Every licensing and technical fact below comes from the vendor's own page, which we read on 4 November 2026. Where a figure is our arithmetic, we say so, and where we could not verify something, we leave it out.
What changed with VMware licensing?
On 11 December 2023 VMware announced that its portfolio moves from perpetual licensing to subscriptions. VMware's own blog says VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) are available as subscription software only, and that many products that used to be sold alone are now offered only inside those two bundles. Customers with active support contracts keep that support for the contract term.
Broadcom's knowledge base explains the counting rule. VCF and VVF are licensed by the number of physical CPU cores across the ESXi hosts you license, with a minimum of 16 cores per CPU, even when a CPU has fewer. Broadcom's own example converts a host with 2 CPUs of 8 cores into 2 CPUs of 16 cores for billing. The rule matters for refurbished buyers, because many popular second-hand servers carry CPUs with 8 or 12 cores per socket.
You may also read that Broadcom set a 72-core minimum per order. Sources disagree on whether it was ever official, and we found no Broadcom document that sets it, so we do not rely on it. We also do not quote a percentage price increase, because reports vary widely and your quote is what counts.
Broadcom does publish a free ESXi 8.0 Update 3e option. Its knowledge base describes it for home labs and development and test use, with no vCenter management, no vMotion, DRS or HA, no backup through the vSphere storage APIs, no Broadcom support, a limit of 2 physical CPUs per host and 8 vCPUs per VM. That helps a lab. It does not replace a supported production platform.
What are the realistic alternatives?
For a business with a handful of hosts, three platforms cover most needs.
- Proxmox VE: an open-source platform that combines the KVM hypervisor, Linux containers, software-defined storage and networking, with a built-in web interface. The source code is under the GNU AGPLv3, and Proxmox says every feature is accessible at no cost. Subscriptions fund the stable Enterprise repository and support.
- Microsoft Hyper-V: a type 1 hypervisor built into Windows Server. You pay for the Windows Server licence, not for a separate hypervisor, and it runs Windows, Linux and FreeBSD guests.
- XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra: an open-source platform based on Xen, developed by a community and backed by the company Vates. Xen Orchestra is the web console, and the XCP-ng documentation names it as the officially supported backup tool.
KVM-based tools such as oVirt are also available, but we leave them off this short list.
How do they compare?
| Item | Proxmox VE | Hyper-V | XCP-ng |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software licence | AGPLv3, all features free | Included with Windows Server, which is licensed per core | Open source |
| Paid part | Optional subscription per CPU socket per year for the Enterprise repository and support | Windows Server core licences, plus client access licences | Commercial support from Vates |
| Management | Built-in web interface, CLI and API | Hyper-V Manager and Windows Admin Center | Xen Orchestra web console |
| Built-in backup | Proxmox Backup Server is a separate Proxmox product | Use a third-party tool or Windows tooling | Xen Orchestra: full and incremental backup, replication, file-level restore |
| Import from VMware | ESXi import wizard, OVA and OVF import | VM Conversion extension in Windows Admin Center (preview) | Xen Orchestra V2V, including warm migration |
| Best fit | Linux-comfortable teams, mixed workloads | Windows-centred offices | Teams that want Xen and a clean console |
The "best fit" row is our judgement, not a vendor claim. The other rows come from the vendors' documentation and pricing pages listed at the end.
What does Windows Server licensing mean for Hyper-V?
Microsoft's Windows Server 2025 licensing guidance sets the rules. When you license by the physical cores of the server, the number of core licences equals the number of physical cores, subject to a minimum of 8 core licences per processor and 16 per server. Core licences are sold in 2-packs and 16-packs. Standard edition gives rights to two operating system environments (virtual machines) on the licensed server, and Microsoft's own example is a 2-processor server with 8 cores per processor, which needs 16 core licences and gives two. For each additional two VMs you must assign another 16 core licences to that server. Datacenter edition gives unlimited VMs.
The guidance also covers client access licences (CALs) for the users or devices that connect, so ask for them in your quote. If you are still on Windows Server 2016, its support ends on 12 January 2027, which is a good reason to plan this move now. Our Windows Server 2016 end of support guide explains the deadline.
What hardware do these platforms need?
The vendors publish their own requirements. These are the points that decide what you buy.
- Proxmox VE: an Intel VT or AMD-V capable processor, at least 2 GB of memory for the host plus memory for guests, and for ZFS or Ceph about 1 GB of extra memory per TB of used storage. The documentation recommends fast, redundant storage with SSDs, SSDs with power-loss protection, redundant network cards, and it says ZFS and Ceph are not compatible with a hardware RAID controller. Plan for disks that the controller passes through directly.
- Hyper-V: a 64-bit processor with second-level address translation, hardware virtualization enabled in the BIOS or UEFI, and hardware-enforced DEP. Microsoft recommends ECC or similar memory for physical hosts and at least 4 GB of RAM for Hyper-V, and says to plan for more.
- XCP-ng: a hardware compatibility list maintained by Vates covers validated hardware, but XCP-ng does not demand servers from a short list, and many devices outside the list work. The documentation warns that older hardware may not receive vendor updates for side-channel vulnerabilities such as Spectre and Meltdown.
These requirements fit a server with ECC memory, redundant power and remote management, which is what refurbished enterprise servers provide. Our HPE DL380 Gen9, Gen10 and Gen10 Plus guide and the Dell R630, R730 and R730xd comparison cover common choices, and the remote management guide explains iDRAC and iLO. For memory and storage sizing, see how much RAM and storage a business needs and the earlier VMware and Proxmox server configuration guide.
If you stay on VMware, choose CPUs with care. Because of the 16-core minimum, a host with two 8-core CPUs is billed as 32 cores even though it has 16. Count licensable cores before you buy.
How do you migrate from VMware?
Each platform has an official or vendor-supported path. The documents describe the tools, and they also list limits that you should read before you start.
- Proxmox VE: add the ESXi host as an import source in Datacenter, Storage, then select a VM and click Import. The documentation says import was tested from ESXi 6.5 up to 8.0, needs Proxmox VE 8 or later, and does not work for VMs on vSAN storage or for encrypted VM disks. Importing through vCenter reduces performance, so import from the ESXi host. The live-import option starts the VM while the disks copy, which Proxmox says can reduce downtime, and it recommends testing it on a test VM first. For many VMs, serialise the work and import no more than four disks at once.
- Hyper-V: Microsoft's VM Conversion extension in Windows Admin Center migrates VMware VMs from vCenter to Hyper-V with online replication and minimal downtime, and it supports batches of up to 10 VMs. It is in preview, and Microsoft states that it does not owe support services for preview software, so test carefully.
- XCP-ng: Xen Orchestra can migrate VMs from any accessible ESXi host, and the documentation describes warm migration that needs at least one snapshot on the VM. Disks larger than 2040 GiB are imported as QCOW2, which needs XCP-ng 8.3 and a storage repository that supports it. OVA import does not carry the BIOS or UEFI setting, so set it by hand on the new VM.
A cutover plan that works for most small estates:
- Inventory. List every VM, its operating system, disks, snapshots and what depends on it.
- Back up and test a restore. Do this before you change anything.
- Build the new host and check hardware, firmware, network and storage.
- Move one non-critical VM and run it for a week.
- Move the rest in batches, leaving the source VM powered off, not deleted, until the new one has run cleanly.
- Retire the old host or keep it as a spare after your backup of the new platform has been restored once.
What does a three-year cost model look like?
Do not compare licence lines alone. Total the same items for each option over three years: hardware, hypervisor licence or subscription, guest operating system licences, backup software, support, migration effort and the cost of downtime. Our server AMC pricing guide explains how to price support after the warranty ends.
The only price we can quote with confidence is Proxmox, because it is published. This example is our arithmetic from the pricing page on 4 November 2026, for three hosts with two CPU sockets each, which is 6 sockets in total. Prices are in euros, net of VAT, and we have not converted them to rupees.
| Plan | Per socket per year | 6 sockets per year | 6 sockets over 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (3 tickets a year, 1 business day response) | 370 euros | 2,220 euros | 6,660 euros |
| Standard (10 tickets a year, 4 hour response) | 550 euros | 3,300 euros | 9,900 euros |
| Premium (unlimited tickets, 2 hour response) | 1,100 euros | 6,600 euros | 19,800 euros |
Proxmox says subscription cost does not depend on core count, every server in a cluster needs coverage for its occupied sockets, and all nodes in a cluster must use the same plan. For VMware and Windows Server, ask for written quotes for the same three hosts, and use the counting rules above: 16 cores per CPU minimum for VMware, and 8 per processor and 16 per server for Windows Server. For three hosts with two 8-core CPUs each, the VMware rule gives 96 billable cores against 48 physical ones, which is our arithmetic from Broadcom's rule.
Which backup tools work with each platform?
Whichever platform you choose, restore from backup at least once before you rely on it.
- Proxmox VE: Proxmox Backup Server is Proxmox's own backup product. Veeam Backup & Replication also lists Proxmox VE as a supported platform, and its Proxmox documentation says it can restore VMs from VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V backups to Proxmox VE.
- Hyper-V: Veeam Backup & Replication lists Microsoft Hyper-V among its supported virtualization platforms.
- XCP-ng: Xen Orchestra covers automated rolling snapshots, full backup, incremental backup, replication, mirror backup and metadata backup, with file-level restore. Veeam also lists XCP-ng under its universal hypervisor support.
Our on-premise backup server guide and the backup and disaster recovery server guide explain how to size the backup target, and the UPS sizing guide covers power protection for the host.
Who should not leave VMware?
Moving costs time and carries risk, so staying is the right call in some cases.
- An application vendor certifies or supports its software only on VMware.
- Your VMs sit on vSAN, because the Proxmox import wizard does not support them without moving the disks first.
- Your team has deep VMware skills and no time to learn another platform this year.
- Your quote is acceptable once you count the 16-core minimum for your actual hosts.
- You have no tested backup yet. Fix that first, then migrate.
A move is also not urgent for every business. VMware's own blog says customers who are not up for renewal need no immediate action and keep active support for the duration of their contract, so work out your own renewal date before you act.

Frequently asked questions
Is VMware still worth it for a small business in India?
It can be, if your estate is small, your applications are certified only for VMware, or you already hold a quote that you accept. Broadcom now sells VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware Cloud Foundation as subscriptions, licensed per physical core with a minimum of 16 cores per CPU. Ask for a written quote for your exact hosts and compare it with the three-year model in this guide before you decide. If the quote fits your budget and your team knows the platform, staying is a sensible answer.
Is Proxmox really free for commercial use?
The software is. Proxmox VE is released under the GNU AGPLv3, and Proxmox states that all features are accessible at no cost. A paid subscription adds access to the stable Enterprise repository and, on the Basic, Standard and Premium plans, technical support. On its pricing page on 4 November 2026 Proxmox listed Basic at 370 euros, Standard at 550 euros and Premium at 1,100 euros per CPU socket per year, net of VAT. Its Community plan is described as being for home labs and non-critical workloads, and Proxmox points production users to the other plans.
How hard is migrating from ESXi to Proxmox?
For a small estate it is a few days of careful work, not a rebuild. Proxmox VE 8 and later include an ESXi import wizard that reads VMs straight from an ESXi host, tested from ESXi 6.5 to 8.0, and a live-import option that starts the VM while the disks copy. Known limits are VMs on vSAN storage, encrypted VM disks and datastores with special characters, and VMs with snapshots import more slowly. Test the process on one non-critical VM first.
Which refurbished server is best for Proxmox, Hyper-V or XCP-ng?
No single model wins, because the hypervisor cares more about the parts than the badge. Look for a processor with hardware virtualization, enough ECC memory for all your VMs, redundant power, fast storage and, for Proxmox with ZFS or Ceph, a controller that can present the disks directly instead of a hardware RAID volume. Our HPE DL380 and Dell R630, R730 guides cover common Gen9, Gen10 and 13th-generation choices. Check the hypervisor's own hardware compatibility list for the exact model.
Does Proxmox have support in India?
Proxmox sells support itself through its customer portal on the Basic, Standard and Premium subscriptions, and the plans differ in ticket allowance and response time. Proxmox also lists reseller partners on its site. We could not verify a specific India partner, so ask any local firm that offers Proxmox support what it covers and in writing, and treat the vendor subscription as the baseline.
Can I keep using the free version of ESXi instead?
Only for limited cases. Broadcom's knowledge base describes a free ESXi 8.0 Update 3e option for home labs and development and test use. It cannot be managed by vCenter, has no vMotion, DRS, HA or backup through the vSphere storage APIs, offers no Broadcom support, and is limited to 2 physical CPUs per host and 8 vCPUs per VM. That is a poor match for a business that needs its servers to stay up.
