RTO and RPO: the two numbers that actually matter

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) — how much data can you afford to lose? If your last backup was 24 hours ago and something fails now, you lose up to 24 hours of data. Nightly backups give a 24-hour RPO; hourly snapshots tighten that to an hour.

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) — how long can you be down while you restore? A full restore from tape or a slow backup target might take a full business day. A hot-standby secondary server can cut that to minutes. Most SMBs overestimate what RTO they actually need and underspend on RPO (backup frequency) as a result — figure out what a day of downtime versus a day of lost data actually costs your business before sizing the setup.
