How to Check Server Warranty by Serial Number: Dell, HPE, Lenovo, IBM, Cisco and Supermicro (India Guide)
Short answer: to do a server warranty check, find the server’s serial number (Dell calls it the Service Tag) on the chassis label or in the management controller, then enter it on the manufacturer’s own support page. Dell needs only the Service Tag. HPE and Cisco ask you to sign in. Lenovo, and old IBM System x servers, need a four-digit machine type plus the serial number. Supermicro publishes no public serial-number lookup, so its warranty is checked against the invoice date.
Key takeaways
- Every major brand has an official lookup, except Supermicro. Use it before you pay for any used or refurbished server.
- Read the serial from two places, the physical label and the server’s own controller (iDRAC, iLO, XClarity or CIMC), and make sure they match.
- On a server that is several years old, the manufacturer’s warranty has usually expired. The lookup still confirms the exact model, generation and age.
- For a refurbished server, the seller’s own warranty is the cover that actually applies, so compare warranty terms as carefully as hardware specs.
- Lookup pages and login rules change. This guide was last verified on 15 October 2026.
This guide is written for IT managers, sysadmins, procurement teams and business owners in India. It answers the questions people search for most: how to check Dell, HP/HPE, IBM, Lenovo, Cisco and Supermicro server warranty, where the serial number is, what the result means, and what to do if the serial number is not found. It then covers the situations where the check matters, from buying a refurbished server to auditing an old server room.
Serial number, Service Tag, machine type: what each term means
Vendors use different words for the identifier you need. Using the wrong one is the most common reason a lookup fails.
- Serial number (S/N): the unique number of one physical server. HPE, Cisco and Supermicro lookups are built around it.
- Service Tag: Dell’s name for the serial identifier of a PowerEdge server. It sits on a barcoded label together with the Express Service Code, a numeric version used when you call Dell support.
- Product number: a part number for the server model and configuration. HPE prints it near the serial, and some HPE lookups may ask for it.
- Machine type (and model): the identifier used by IBM and Lenovo. On an IBM System x label the product number is the machine type followed by the model, and the lookup needs the four-digit machine type.
- Warranty vs support contract vs AMC: warranty is the cover included with the purchase for a fixed period. A support contract or annual maintenance contract (AMC) is paid cover that you add, usually after the warranty ends.

Which situation are you in? Server warranty check use cases
1. You are buying a used or refurbished server. Ask for the serial number and a photo of the label before you pay, run the lookup yourself and compare the result with the listing. This is the highest-value use of the check. Our guides on buying a refurbished server in India, refurbished vs used vs open-box and a dealer vs a scrap vendor explain what else to ask.
2. Your server has just been delivered. Read the serial from the label and from the management controller, confirm they match the invoice, then run the lookup. Follow it with the steps in our post-delivery testing checklist.
3. You are auditing an existing server room or taking over someone else’s. Build an asset list of model, serial and age for every machine. Reading serials by software saves a walk to the rack (commands are in the brand sections below), and Cisco’s checker accepts a .csv of serials for a bulk report.
4. A server is out of warranty and you need cover. Once the lookup shows expired coverage, the usual options are a paid server AMC or replacement. Our explainer on how AMC pricing works in India shows what drives the cost, and Dell server repair and IBM server repair guides cover repair options.
5. You want to sell or exchange an old server. Buyers will ask for the serial number and will check it, so have the model, serial and lookup result ready. Serverwale’s sell or exchange old server page explains that route.
6. You are not sure you should own the hardware. If the aim is a project or a short-term need, compare ownership and renting first. See server rental vs ownership, the Dell server rental page and server rental in Delhi.
How do I do a Dell server warranty check in India?
Answer: find the Service Tag, open Dell Support’s Support Services & Warranty page, enter the tag and read the warranty status and expiry date. The process is the same in India as elsewhere.
- Find the Service Tag. On most PowerEdge rack and tower servers it is on the pull-out information tab at the front, which also carries the Express Service Code. Some models, such as the R740xd2, put the tab at the back, and a printed label on the left side of the chassis may repeat it.
- Read it from software. In the iDRAC web interface go to System > Overview. Over SSH,
racadm getsvctagprints the tag. On Linux, sudo dmidecode -s system-serial-numberreturns the serial. On VMware ESXi,esxcli hardware platform getshows it. - Look it up. Enter the Service Tag on Dell Support. If you need the Express Service Code, open the product page for the tag and use the More drop-down next to the Service Tag.
The pull-out tab also has a QR code that opens the product’s Dell Support page. Dell retired its older Quick Resource Locator site in October 2024. For a Dell service tag lookup or a Dell configuration check by service tag, entering the tag opens that product’s support page, so you can confirm the model name against the listing. Then compare what is inside the machine with the original configuration your seller declares. If you are weighing Dell against HP, our Dell vs HP servers comparison and the PowerEdge R740 vs R640 guide help with the choice.
How do I do an HP or HPE server warranty check by serial number?
Answer: sign in to the HPE Support Center, open Warranty Check, enter the serial number and submit. HP’s server business is now Hewlett Packard Enterprise, so ProLiant servers are checked on HPE’s site.
- Find the serial. It is on the product label, marked Serial or S/N, with the product number printed near it. You can also read it from the server’s management controller (iLO).
- Open Warranty Check. In the HPE Support Center go to Resources > Warranty Check, enter the serial number and click Submit. If several products share the serial, a pop-up asks you to choose.
- Read the status. The result lists each service type with its service level and start and end dates. Active means more than 90 days remain, Expiring Soon means fewer than 90 days, Expired means the end date passed within the last year, and Active in Future is a contract that starts later.
HPE notes that for a registered product the expiry is based on the purchase date, and otherwise it is estimated from the manufacture date. That estimate is useful for a second-hand unit nobody registered, because it tells you the machine’s age. If the serial is not found, re-check what you typed; if the product shows as not entitled and you think it should be covered, contact HPE Support. How do I check Lenovo and IBM server warranty?
Answer: use Lenovo’s Data Center Support Warranty and Parts lookup and enter the four-digit machine type and the serial number. This covers Lenovo ThinkSystem and, because Lenovo took over IBM’s x86 server line in 2014, IBM System x as well.
- Read the label. The chassis label shows the product number (machine type plus model) and the serial number. The machine type is the four-digit part you enter.
- Cross-check in software. Lenovo XClarity Controller, or the older IMM on System x, can show the same values.
- Run the lookup. Lenovo’s support documents give one lookup for System x, ThinkSystem and ThinkServer products, and a separate page for warranty upgrades.
Be realistic with an IBM server warranty check. IBM’s archived System x warranty page lists default on-site warranties of three years for many models and one year for older ones, so a unit sold today is almost certainly out of original cover. The lookup remains worth doing because the machine type fixes the exact model and generation. For model-level help see our guides to IBM System x tower servers and refurbished Lenovo ThinkSystem servers, or browse IBM rack servers and refurbished Lenovo servers.
How do I check Cisco server warranty status?
Answer: sign in to Cisco.com and use the Device Coverage Checker with the chassis serial number. It checks service contract coverage for one device, or for a group when you upload a .csv file of serial numbers.
- Get the serial. Read the chassis label. On Cisco switches and routers the
show inventorycommand lists serial numbers and product IDs. - Use the right tool. The Device Coverage Checker answers “is this unit covered?”. A separate tool, the Warranty and Service Finder, works from a Product ID and tells you which warranty applies to a model, not to a specific unit.
A second-hand Cisco unit often shows no active contract. That is common for refurbished gear and does not by itself mean something is wrong. Keep the serial and Product ID together in your records. See our pages on refurbished Cisco servers, the Cisco networking price guide and the Cisco server AMC price list.
How do I check Supermicro server warranty?
Answer: Supermicro does not list a public serial-number lookup. Its Limited Warranty runs from the date of Supermicro’s invoice, so the check is arithmetic: original invoice date plus the warranty period.
The standard terms for SuperServer and rackmount systems list 3 years of labor, 1 year of parts and 1 year of advance cross-ship, unless the invoice states different terms. The system serial number is on the back of the chassis. To raise a claim, Supermicro asks for the invoice date, invoice number, model name, serial number and reason for return. Without the original invoice it is hard to prove the start date, so for a second-hand Supermicro lean on the seller’s warranty. See our refurbished Supermicro servers page and the Supermicro server price guide.
How to compare the lookup result with what you were sold
- Model and generation: the result should describe the same family as the listing, for example PowerEdge R730, not R630.
- Age: the manufacture or ship date should fit the generation. A listing that calls a Gen9 server “2023” does not add up.
- Configuration: compare CPU, RAM and drives inside the machine with the original build. A difference is not automatically bad, because refurbishers often upgrade memory or swap drives. The seller should list every change in writing. Check processor details against our Intel Xeon processor reference.
- Coverage: expired is normal on older units. What matters is who covers the machine from today.
Does a refurbished server keep the manufacturer warranty?
Answer: usually not for long. The manufacturer’s warranty counts from the original sale or manufacture date, so on a unit that is several years old it has normally ended. If a lookup shows active cover, check the manufacturer’s terms on transfer and ask the seller to confirm in writing.
That makes the reseller’s warranty the one to compare. Ask any seller what it covers, how long it lasts, where support is available and how a claim is raised. Serverwale’s policy page states a minimum 1-year comprehensive hardware warranty on refurbished servers, covering component failures, RAM faults, drive issues and firmware defects, with extended warranty for 2 additional years (3 years in total) available at additional charge, and on-site support across Delhi NCR.
Red flags when you check a serial number
- The label is missing, painted over or covered by a second sticker. Ask why, and ask for the serial from the management controller.
- The chassis label and the software serial differ. This can be an honest chassis or motherboard swap, but the seller must explain it and the warranty must cover the whole machine.
- The lookup returns a different model from the listing. Pause the purchase until it is resolved.
- “Not found” for a correctly typed serial. Retype it, add the product number or machine type if the page asks, then contact the manufacturer’s support. Treat the unit as unverified until it is identified.
- The seller will not share the serial before payment. Reasonable sellers send it, often with a photo of the label, so that you can verify it yourself.
Why a verifiable seller matters, and what Serverwale covers
A serial-number check only helps if the seller lets you do it and stands behind the machine afterwards. If you are comparing a Serverwale quote with another seller’s, send both serial numbers and model names and run the lookups side by side. Our refurbished server price index and the refurbished vs new TCO comparison help with the cost side.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Dell server warranty in India?
Find the Service Tag on the pull-out information tab at the front of the server, in iDRAC under System > Overview, or with the racadm getsvctag command. Then open the Support Services and Warranty page on Dell Support, enter the Service Tag and read the warranty status and expiry date.
How do I check HP server warranty in India?
HP servers are now HPE ProLiant. Sign in to the HPE Support Center, open Resources > Warranty Check, enter the serial number from the product label and submit. The result shows service types, service levels, start and end dates and a status such as Active or Expired.
Where is the serial number on an HPE ProLiant?
It is on the product label on the server, marked Serial or S/N, with the product number printed close by. You can also read it from the server’s management controller. Some lookups may ask for the product number as well as the serial.
Can I check warranty on an IBM server?
Yes, for IBM System x servers, through Lenovo, which took over the x86 server line in 2014. Use Lenovo’s Data Center Support Warranty and Parts lookup with the four-digit machine type and the serial number from the label. Expect most System x units to be out of original warranty, though the result still confirms the model.
Does a refurbished server keep the manufacturer warranty?
Usually the manufacturer warranty has already expired, because it counts from the original sale or manufacture date. If some remains, check the manufacturer’s terms on transfer and get the seller to confirm in writing. The seller’s own warranty is the one to compare. Serverwale states a minimum 1-year hardware warranty with 2 more years available as paid extended warranty.
What if the service tag or serial number is not found?
Retype it carefully from the label and compare it with the value in the management controller. Add the product number or machine type if the page asks for one. If it is still not found, contact the manufacturer’s support with the serial. Until the unit is identified, treat the purchase as unverified and avoid paying in full.
Is there a way to check Supermicro warranty online?
Supermicro’s warranty and support pages do not list a public serial-number lookup. The warranty runs from Supermicro’s invoice date, so ask for the original invoice date and contact Supermicro support with the serial number from the back of the chassis to confirm coverage.
Can I check several servers at once?
Cisco’s Device Coverage Checker accepts a .csv file of serial numbers for a bulk report, after you sign in to Cisco.com. For other brands, collect the serials first with iDRAC, iLO or dmidecode, then run each lookup. The result is a simple asset list of model, serial and warranty status.
What is the difference between warranty and AMC for a server?
Warranty is the cover included with the purchase for a fixed period. An annual maintenance contract (AMC) is paid cover you add, typically once the warranty has ended, to keep repairs and support going. Check what each includes, such as parts, labor, response time and on-site visits.
