Dell PowerEdge R640 — 1U Dual Xeon Scalable Rack Server in India

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is the 1U workhorse of Dell's 14th generation: two Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Skylake or Cascade Lake) giving up to 56 cores and 112 threads, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, and up to 10 NVMe bays — all in a single rack unit. If you are paying for rack space in a colo, that density is the entire argument.

Serverwale supplies tested, warranty-backed R640 configurations across India, built to the cores, memory and drive layout your workload actually needs.

When the R640 is the right buy

  • You pay per rack unit. In a Mumbai or Bengaluru colo, rack space is a monthly bill. Fifty-six cores in 1U halves what the same compute costs you in a 2U chassis — over three years that difference is real money.
  • NVMe matters more than drive count. The 10-bay NVMe backplane turns the R640 into a genuinely fast database or virtualisation host. This is the main thing it does better than an older R630 or R730.
  • Dense virtualisation. 56 cores with 384GB–768GB runs a serious VMware or Proxmox host, and iDRAC9 means you never need to visit the rack.
  • Scale-out clusters. Ceph, Kubernetes and HPC nodes where you want many identical 1U boxes rather than a few big ones.

When the R640 is the wrong buy — read this before ordering

1U buys density and costs you expansion. Be clear about the trade-off:

  • No GPUs. A 1U chassis has no room for double-width cards. If there is any AI, rendering or GPU compute in your plan, buy a GPU server instead — do not try to make an R640 work.
  • Few drive bays. 8 or 10 small-form-factor drives is the ceiling. For a backup target or a storage box you want the R740xd or dedicated SAN storage.
  • Louder and hotter per U. 1U fans work harder. Fine in a data centre; not something you want under a desk in an office.
  • On a tight budget? An R730 gives you more cores per rupee if you have the rack space and do not need NVMe.

R640 vs R740 vs R730 — the short version

  • R640 (1U, Xeon Scalable) — maximum compute per rack unit, NVMe-capable. Colo and cluster nodes.
  • R740 / R740xd (2U, Xeon Scalable) — same CPU generation, but room for GPUs and far more drives. The general-purpose pick.
  • R730 (2U, Xeon E5 v3/v4) — a generation older and the cheapest cost-per-core. Best value when NVMe and single-thread speed are not the point.

Condition, testing and warranty

Every R640 is bench-tested before dispatch: CPU and memory burn-in, SMART health checks on every drive, PERC controller and battery verification, iDRAC check, and a full firmware/BIOS update. Chassis are cleaned, fans and thermal paste inspected, and the exact configuration — CPU SKU, DIMM population, drive models, PERC and PSU count — is documented on the invoice.

Units ship with a Serverwale warranty of 90 days to 1 year depending on the configuration; the exact term for this unit is shown on the Warranty tab above. Pan-India delivery from our Burari, Delhi facility. For longer cover or guaranteed on-site response, add a server AMC.

Pricing

R640 pricing is driven by the build — the Xeon pair (a 12-core Silver versus a 28-core Platinum is a large gap), how much DDR4 you populate, and whether you want the NVMe backplane. Tell us the workload and you will get a written quote with the exact part numbers. For a broad sense of what refurbished enterprise hardware costs in India today, see our refurbished server price index. If you would rather not buy outright, we also rent Dell servers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a Dell PowerEdge R640 in India?
It depends entirely on the configuration — the CPU pair alone can swing the total substantially, before memory and NVMe. Serverwale quotes against your actual requirement with exact part numbers rather than a headline figure that will not match your build. Call +91-87962-44410 for a written quote.

How many cores and how much RAM does the R640 support?
Up to 28 cores per socket with 2nd-gen Xeon Scalable, so 56 cores and 112 threads across two sockets, and up to 3TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots. Most business builds land at 16–32 cores with 128–384GB.

Can the Dell R640 take a GPU?
Not a real one. A 1U chassis has no room for double-width cards. Some single-width, low-profile cards fit, but if GPU compute is part of the plan, buy a purpose-built GPU server instead.

What is the difference between the R640 and the R740?
Same 14th-generation Xeon Scalable platform. The R640 is 1U — denser, but limited to 8–10 drives and no GPUs. The R740 is 2U — more PCIe slots, more drives, and it takes GPUs. Choose on rack space and expansion, not on CPU.

Does the R640 support NVMe drives?
Yes — the 10-bay chassis supports an NVMe backplane, which is the main performance advantage over the older R630 and R730. Confirm the backplane when you order; it is not present on every unit.

Does a refurbished R640 come with a warranty?
Yes — 90 days to 1 year depending on the configuration, with optional AMC for longer cover and on-site response. Every unit is bench-tested and the exact spec is documented on the invoice.
