Refurbished Dell PowerEdge R730 — 2U Dual Xeon Rack Server in India

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is the server most Indian businesses actually end up buying refurbished — and for good reason. It is a 2U, dual-socket 13th-generation rack server built around Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 processors, taking you to 44 cores and 88 threads with up to 1.5TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots. Nearly a decade after launch it is still the cheapest genuinely reliable way to run serious virtualisation, and parts are everywhere.

Serverwale supplies tested, warranty-backed R730 configurations across India — configured to the cores, memory and drive layout you need, not a fixed SKU you have to work around.

Why the R730 is still the default refurbished buy in India

  • Cost per core is unbeatable. A dual E5-2680 v4 R730 gives you 28 cores for a fraction of what an equivalent new server costs. For general virtualisation, that maths still wins in 2026.
  • DDR4 is cheap and everywhere. Memory is usually the cost trap on older servers. With the R730 it is the opposite — DDR4 RDIMM is plentiful, so going to 256GB or 384GB costs far less than on a DDR5 platform.
  • Parts and spares are abundant. PSUs, caddies, fans, PERC cards, iDRAC licences — all readily available in India. A server you can actually get spares for is worth more than a newer one you cannot.
  • iDRAC8 Enterprise means no data-centre trips. Full remote console and virtual media — you can rebuild the OS from your desk, which matters if the box sits in a colo in Navi Mumbai and you are in Delhi.

What the R730 is genuinely good for

  • Virtualisation hosts — VMware ESXi, Proxmox and Hyper-V. 44 cores with 256GB+ comfortably runs 20–40 typical business VMs.
  • File, ERP and database servers — Tally, SAP B1, mid-size SQL and PostgreSQL workloads sit well within its envelope.
  • Backup and storage targets — 8 × 3.5" bays with an HBA330 make a solid Veeam repository or TrueNAS box. For higher capacity, look at SAN storage or a dedicated NAS.
  • Test, staging and CI — the standard way to give developers real hardware without a cloud bill.

R730 or R740xd — where the line is

Be honest about which one you need; the R730 is not always the right answer.

  • Choose the R730 if you are consolidating older boxes, running general VMs, or want the most cores per rupee. It is the value pick.
  • Choose the R740xd (Xeon Scalable, 14th gen) if you need NVMe, more drive bays, higher single-thread performance, or you want a platform with a longer support runway ahead of it.
  • Do not buy an R730 for AI or heavy GPU work. It takes GPUs, but PCIe Gen3 and older CPUs will bottleneck modern cards. Use a purpose-built GPU server instead.

If you are still weighing Intel against AMD for the same budget, our Xeon vs EPYC comparison covers the trade-offs.

Condition, testing and warranty

Every R730 is bench-tested before dispatch: CPU and memory burn-in, SMART health checks on every drive, PERC controller and battery verification, iDRAC check, and a full firmware/BIOS update. Chassis are cleaned, fans and thermal paste inspected, and the exact configuration — CPU SKU, DIMM population, drive models, PERC and PSU count — is documented on the invoice.

Units ship with a Serverwale warranty of 90 days to 1 year depending on the configuration; the exact term for this unit is shown on the Warranty tab above. Pan-India delivery from our Burari, Delhi facility. For longer cover or guaranteed on-site response, add a server AMC.

Pricing

R730 pricing depends on the build — the CPU pair, how much DDR4 you populate, the drive layout and whether you need an H730P with cache or a plain HBA. Tell us the workload and you will get a written quote with the exact part numbers. For a broad sense of what refurbished enterprise hardware costs in India today, see our refurbished server price index. If you would rather not buy outright, we also rent Dell servers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dell PowerEdge R730 still worth buying in 2026?
For general virtualisation, file, ERP and database workloads — yes. The cost per core is still the best on the market, DDR4 is cheap, and spares are everywhere in India. It is the wrong choice only if you need NVMe throughput, modern GPU acceleration, or the highest single-thread performance.

How many cores and how much RAM does the R730 support?
Up to 22 cores per socket with Xeon E5-2600 v4, so 44 cores and 88 threads across two sockets, and up to 1.5TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots. Most business builds land at 20–28 cores with 128–384GB, which is plenty for 20–40 VMs.

What is the difference between the R730 and the R730xd?
Same platform and CPUs. The R730xd is the storage-dense variant — it takes far more drives (up to 16 × 3.5" or 24 × 2.5", plus rear bays). Buy the R730 for compute, the R730xd when the drive count is the point.

Can the R730 run VMware ESXi?
Yes, and it is one of the most common ESXi hosts in India. Note that recent VMware releases have dropped support for older hardware, so confirm the ESXi version you intend to run — Proxmox is a common alternative on this generation and has no such restriction.

Does a refurbished R730 come with a warranty?
Yes — 90 days to 1 year depending on the configuration, with optional AMC for longer cover and on-site response. Every unit is bench-tested and the exact spec is documented on the invoice.
