• CAD and 3D modelling. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit and Fusion 360 lean on single-thread speed and a certified Quadro driver — both of which the Z620 has. For most drafting and modelling work, it still feels fast.
• Adobe and video editing. Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop run well on a dual-Xeon Z620 with 64GB and an SSD. It is a common edit-bay machine in Indian studios for exactly this reason.
• Many-core batch work. Two E5-2600 v2 CPUs give a serious core count for CPU rendering, simulation and compiling — work that scales with threads rather than clock speed.
• Quiet, desk-side, ECC. You get ECC memory and workstation reliability without rack noise. For a design or engineering desk, that matters more than it sounds.

Where the Z620 will let you down — read this first

This is a 2012–2013 platform. That has real consequences, and we would rather you know them before you buy than after:

• DDR3, capped at 96GB. If your work needs 128GB+ — large point clouds, big simulations, heavy VMs — the Z620 simply cannot go there. Look at a Z640 or Z840 (DDR4) instead.
• No native NVMe boot. You can add NVMe on a PCIe card, but it is not a native boot device on this generation. If storage speed is your bottleneck, that is a real limitation.
• Not an AI or modern-GPU machine. It will take a Quadro, but pairing a current high-VRAM card with a decade-old platform wastes both. For AI, training or heavy GPU rendering, buy a GPU server or a purpose-built new workstation.
• Older single-thread performance. Software that depends on one fast core — some CAD operations, older simulation solvers — will feel the age of these CPUs against a modern chip.

Z620, Z640 or a new build?

• HP Z620 (DDR3, dual E5-2600) — the value pick. Best when the budget is tight and the work is CAD, Adobe or CPU-bound batch jobs.
• HP Z640 (DDR4, Xeon E5 v3/v4) — a generation newer, more memory headroom, better GPU pairing. Worth the step up if your workloads are growing.

Every Z620 is bench-tested before dispatch: CPU and memory burn-in, SMART health checks on the drives, GPU verification under load, PSU check, and a BIOS update. Chassis are cleaned inside and out, fans and thermal paste inspected, and the exact configuration — CPU SKU, DIMM population, drive and graphics card — is documented on the invoice, so you know precisely what arrives.
