Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is Dell's extreme storage-density variant of the R740xd — same dual-socket 2U platform (14th generation, LGA3647, Intel Xeon Scalable 1st/2nd Gen), but built with a much larger drive cage: up to 24x 3.5" SAS/SATA bays (up to 336TB) or 16x 3.5" + 8x 2.5" mixed, plus rear bays, versus the standard R740xd's 12x 3.5" ceiling. That extra drive density comes with a memory trade-off: the xd2 supports only 16 DIMM slots (RDIMM only, no LRDIMM), capping out at 512GB — far below the standard R740/R740xd's 3TB LRDIMM ceiling. Choose this chassis specifically when raw drive count matters more than RAM capacity.
