Where this server will let you down

• It's a Skylake/Cascade Lake-era platform (2017–2020). No DDR5, no PCIe 5.0 — if your workload needs the newest per-core performance, look at a newer platform instead.
• Not every R740 unit has an NVMe backplane. The chassis supports NVMe on specific 2.5" configurations, but plenty of R740s in the field are SAS/SATA-only — confirm the exact drive backplane before assuming NVMe support.
• Not GPU-first. It supports GPUs, but the PCIe layout and cooling aren't purpose-built for dense multi-GPU — for AI/ML training at scale, see our GPU servers.
• Onboard networking is base 1GbE. Faster 10GbE/25GbE needs the optional rNDC/OCP mezzanine card — confirm this is included if your workload needs it.
