What The R715 Actually Is
The Dell PowerEdge R715 is Dell's 11th-generation, AMD-only 2-socket 2U rack server (launched ~2010) — built around AMD's Opteron 6100 ("Magny-Cours") and 6200 ("Interlagos") series processors on Socket G34. Dell never offered an Intel CPU option on this chassis, and AMD EPYC didn't exist until 2017 — so this is a genuine AMD Opteron platform, not a mixed-brand or EPYC-capable one.
Real Specifications
Form factor: 2U rack, fixed (not 1U or 4U). CPU: up to 2x AMD Opteron 6100/6200 series, up to 16 cores per socket (32 cores total in a dual-CPU config). RAM: 16 DIMM slots (8 per CPU), DDR3 RDIMM, up to 512GB with 32GB modules. Management: iDRAC6 Express or Enterprise (Dell's own remote-management stack). Hot-swap SAS/SATA drive bays, redundant hot-swap PSU.
Where This Will Let You Down
This is a 2011-era AMD Opteron platform — do not expect Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC compatibility (neither exists for this socket), DDR4 memory, NVMe drive support, or modern PCIe Gen3/4 bandwidth. Best suited for legacy application hosting, virtualization test labs, and cost-driven bulk compute rather than latency-sensitive or GPU-attached workloads. For current-generation AMD servers, see our AMD server page instead.
